By delivering harmonized data, trusted AI, and faster innovation, we uplift and empower our customers—and our customers’ customers—to make better, more confident decisions. The world’s top companies across every major industry trust Teradata to improve business performance, enrich customer experiences, and fully integrate data across the enterprise.

What You’ll Do

In this role, you will lead the development and execution of Teradata’s enterprise‑wide intellectual property (IP) strategy across patents, trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets, and related IP assets. You will serve as the primary IP legal advisor to executive leadership and partner closely with product, engineering, and go‑to‑market teams to protect, develop, monetize, and enforce Teradata’s IP portfolio.

Success in this role looks like aligning IP strategy with business objectives, proactively managing risk, strengthening Teradata’s competitive position, and ensuring the company’s IP assets are effectively governed, protected, and leveraged globally.

Who You’ll Work With

You’ll be a senior leader within the Teradata Law Department, working closely with executive leadership, Product, Engineering, Marketing, and Go‑to‑Market teams. You will partner regularly with the Patent Strategy Committee (including the CTO, CPO, and CAO), manage a small team of IP professionals, and oversee outside counsel relationships worldwide. This is a highly visible, enterprise‑facing role requiring strong cross‑functional collaboration and executive presence.

What Makes You a Qualified Candidate

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school with active bar membership in at least one U.S. jurisdiction
  • Minimum of 15 years of intellectual property law experience, including meaningful in‑house experience at a technology company
  • Deep expertise in U.S. patent law and practice, including patent prosecution, portfolio strategy, enforcement, and NPE/PAE risk
  • Demonstrated experience managing global patent and trademark portfolios and outside counsel relationships
  • Proven ability to operate at the executive level and translate complex IP concepts into clear business guidance

What You’ll Bring

You bring strategic vision, strong business judgment, and hands‑on IP leadership experience in a technology environment. You are comfortable owning a broad IP portfolio, leading through influence, and making risk‑balanced decisions aligned to corporate objectives. In addition, you bring:

  • USPTO registration (strongly preferred)
  • Broad IP expertise across patents, trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets, open‑source licensing, and IP aspects of commercial and M&A transactions
  • Experience driving patent strategy, including invention harvesting, prosecution oversight, maintenance, divestiture, and monetization
  • Experience managing NPE risk, including third‑party defensive programs and proactive risk assessment
  • Ability to counsel on branding, trademark clearance, and global trademark portfolio management
  • Experience supporting IP‑centric transactions, licensing, and partnerships with customers and technology partners
  • Knowledge of open‑source licensing and compliance frameworks
  • Experience providing IP support for litigation, disputes, M&A due diligence, and SEC/public disclosures
  • Familiarity with IP program technology tools such as CPI, PatSnap, or similar docketing and analytics platforms
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple complex matters simultaneously
  • High ethical standards and sound judgment in handling sensitive and confidential matters
