Job Summary

This Senior Software Engineer position is responsible for all phases of software development life cycle from software design through customer support. This engineer will be part of a team responsible for the integration of third party Hadoop distributions and delivering software releases for use in Teradata product offerings. In this position, you are responsible for understanding impacts of new requirements, designing solutions, implementing of new functionality, enabling new features/configurations, making bug fixes, and addressing support issues reported from systems in the field. This position will also include enhancing automation in conjunction with other Teradata component teams.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Implement changes to the Teradata Hadoop software asset to deliver new product requirements around the area of installation, configuration/tuning, system operations and upgrade
  • Create test cases to verify new functionality for execution within the automated test framework
  • Identify and resolve defects found during testing which may entail making a fix, working with partners to drive the resolution, or contributing to an Apache project
  • Develop scripts, utilities, tools, and processes increasing automation capabilities for Teradata components
  • Enhance test framework by adding test cases for new functionality, addressing issues discovered during testing or in the field, automating manual test cases
  • Provide on call services to back up Customer Support when engineering help is needed on customer calls during business and off-hours when needed.

Skills and Attributes

The ideal candidate is a highly motivated and creative software engineer who is ready to participate in a team environment and contribute to the success of Teradata. The successful candidate will have:

  • Demonstrated ability to review new requirements, create impact analysis and architect solutions
  • Participated in product design reviews to provide input on functional requirements, product designs, schedules, or potential problems
  • Strong programming skills in Bash Shell and Python scripting
  • Experience with configuration management tools such as Puppet, Ansible, Chef, and/or Docker
  • Previous experience with enterprise software development and/or maintenance
  • Proficiency working in Linux/Unix environments including virtualization technologies
  • Worked in a Scrum team and applied Agile methods including analyzing, estimating, and organizing individual work
  • Working knowledge of relational databases, data warehouses, Hadoop
  • Familiarity with network security principles and implementation
  • Experience debugging and troubleshooting issues on parallel distributed computer platforms
  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written)

Basic Qualifications 

  • Bachelor's degree in CS, EE, CE, or relevant related experience
  • 5+ years Software development and/or engineering experience, including but not limited to:
  • Relational databases, Data warehousing, Hadoop environments
  • Unit, Functional, System and Regression testing
  • Strong Linux experience
  • Python programming skills

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous/current experience with the Hadoop ecosystem and related technologies (distributed computing, HDFS, YARN, ZooKeeper, MapReduce, Spark, Hive, HBase, Kerberos)
  • Familiarity with the Bourne class of shells (sh, ksh, and bash) and related scripting, source code repositories, build/deploy tools (Jenkins, TeamCity), UNIX / LINUX administration
  • Experience with Ansible, Docker, Cloud
