Project Manager

The Teradata Project Manager (PM) is responsible for planning, scheduling, monitoring and leading and directing projects that incorporate Teradata and market solutions (as cloud and open source ones), meeting agreed client requirements and expected Teradata business results. He or she will also support the organization in finding the right resources for delivery execution, acting as a virtual people manager within the context of the project. Will also support in finding and promoting new work and Teradata’s solutions at the client.

Position Description

The Teradata PM is the ultimate responsible for Project Execution at our customers, guaranteeing client satisfaction as well as achieving Teradata business objectives. He or she may lead a single complex project or manage or oversee multiple smaller projects, for one or several customers. The PM manages Teradata local and remote employees, and third-party contractors, to ensure projects meet established time, cost, technical, and quality objectives. The PM is also responsible for meeting Teradata’s policies, as well as driving project reviews as needed.

The Project Manager supports projects beginning in the pre-contract sales process, providing and/or validating scope and estimations, and will manage them through closeout. He or she will also lead the process of producing the Statements of Work and contracting as needed. Project Managers will be supported by other roles in the organization, as Program Managers and/or Project Administrators, as well as by additional Project Managers, and/or Project Tech Leads.

The PM requires excellent written and spoken skills, and deep knowledge of the solutions and technologies being delivered, including being able to conduct business communications. This role requires a level of seniority and client management skills that permit the candidate to become a trusted advisor of our customers.

Key Areas of Responsibility

Leadership: Provide though leadership to senior responsible owners and senior stakeholders from our clients in all aspects related to the successful implementation of the assigned projects, in coordination with other Teradata roles and organizations. Lead the assigned projects from pre-sales to completion guaranteeing customer satisfaction and Teradata business objectives.

Sales Support & Business Development: Lead the scoping, planning, cost estimating, and pricing of consulting projects. Responsible for statement of work development and risk assessment, including but not limited to defining goals and objectives, identifying and documenting client requirements, resource requirements, project budget, project risks, and the translation of the client’s business requirements into specific deliverables. During the engagement, identify future sales opportunities; participate in pre-sales planning, project pricing, bid review, and presentation of sales proposals. Acquire incremental business within the project through change control.

Project Execution: Ensure projects are completed on-time, within budget, and within client expectations for quality and functionality, achieving and exceeding both customer satisfaction targets, and Teradata business objectives. Lead one complex project at a time, or a collection or smaller ones, that span both a range of Teradata and market technologies and delivery methodologies. Manage client acceptance of the solution and manage client expectations in line with the agreed statement of work. Manage day-to-day relationship with client stakeholders and resolution of all issues. Maintain and communicate project status to all stakeholders in reports and status meetings. Maintains project repository and artifacts. Drive project reviews and guarantees compliance with Teradata policies.

Business and Resource Management: Along with other Teradata roles and organizations, build a project team, including Teradata employees, offshore resources, and contractors. Ensure proper set up of the engagement in the time keeping system, ensuring consultants and contractors are always current with their reported time. Ensure monthly billings, timely collection of revenue, and manage procurement and payment to contractors. Maintains updated the information on the financial and reporting systems and produces financial and status reports using them.

Knowledge Capture & Reuse: Ensure that Teradata knowledge resources and tools are fully leveraged, including reference information architecture and applicable IP repositories. Lead project/engagement close-out debriefings to identify lessons learned and best practices. As all consultants are expected to build value in their practice through the contribution and reuse of consulting assets, after each assigned project he or she is expected to evaluate the project deliverables and to contribute those items that may be useful to other consultants that may be assigned similar projects. When a new project is assigned, they will lead consultants to search the asset repository for assets that may improve or accelerate the project delivery.

Personal Development: All consultants are expected to build value in themselves. Teradata’s extensive library of both instructor led and web-based training provides ample opportunity for the consultant to build and maintain marketable skills. Time has been allocated specifically for this task and each consultant is expected to have a ‘Learning Plan’. Progress against the learning plan is part of the annual appraisal.

Consultant Skills

Partner with Customers: Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of client’s business and successfully utilize the Teradata portfolio of services and products to build client success and profitability. Create positive, long-term business relationships with clients. Ability to define the client’s requirements within the context of their business. Ability to assess the opportunities, benefits, risks, and success factors of a potential solution.

Project Management: Ability to systematically identify, document, and manage project requirements. Tracing the requirements from source through implementation and verification and controlling all requirements and scope change. Define project scope. Estimate time, cost, and resource requirements. Plan projects according to the advocated Teradata PM Methodology. Assess project risk, develop risk mitigation strategies, and support the sales team to develop contracts and project pricing. Use the appropriate project management methodology (Agile or Waterfall) based upon customer and project requirements. Estimate, plan, and manage the work of subcontractors and other external project resources. Develop and manage subcontracting agreements.

Facilitate & Foster Collaboration: Engage with others and gain participation in collaborative efforts. Use the most effective communication technique according to a given situation. Demonstrate style and presentation versatility to achieve desired results.

Consulting Competencies: Ability to identify and bring together a variety of technologies to deliver a complete information system that supports operational and management objectives. Knowledge of Architecture Principles, Advocated Positions, Design Patterns, and Implementation Alternatives. Ability to use logical sound judgment and experience to determine the appropriate course of action based on scenario, procedures, and guidelines for a given situation. Gather and use information needed to develop effective solutions to difficult problems or situations. Provide timely guidance and feedback to help others strengthen specific knowledge and skill areas needed to accomplish a task or solve a problem. Guide the activities of an individual, group, or team toward a desired result or outcome. Drive consensus and team ownership of decisions. Ability to come to sound agreements with counterparts in business or organizational situations where there is disagreement or differences in interest. Communicates effectively at all levels, with Teradata and client personnel internal and external to the project team.

Technical Skills

Analytics and Data Management Technologies: Experience delivering enterprise data and analytics solutions, ideally across an ecosystem of open source and Teradata commercial technologies.

Implementation Approaches: Experience of different implementation options for implementation of data & Analytics solutions, including Waterfall and Agile development techniques and tools, such as PMP, Agile (Scrum, Kanban), SAFe, DevOps, ITIL, JIRA, and an understanding of Teradata ‘s advocated positions and of governance requirements for each one.

Experience and Other Requirements

Experience: minimum of 5 years of relevant experience required.

Certifications: relevant certifications or courses in Project and Program management. Technical knowledge and certifications in the relevant technologies is also considered a plus.

Education: BS, MBA, or MS in business, technical or professional discipline, or equivalent work experience.
