Job Title:  Senior Competitive Technology Analyst - Cloud       

Location: San Diego, CA 

Overview:

The position is for a Senior Competitive Technology Analyst with strong technical knowledge of competitor’s product capabilities relative to Teradata as well as competitor’s marketing, product positioning and sales strategies. This role will assist Teradata Product Marketing, Engineering, Product Management and field personnel (technical sales support) and others to understand Teradata’s primary and emerging competitors. This person will research (sometimes using hands on testing including use of public cloud services), compare and contrast competing products, technologies and architectures, and the ability to effectively prepare and deliver the findings of this analysis via verbal (e.g. presentations) and written (e.g. white papers) communications throughout Teradata. 

You will:

• Based on their experience and knowledge, current, publicly available information, vendor actions, and known business transactions, provide insight into possible future competitor technology offerings in the form of white papers, internal blogs, presentations and participation on internal working groups
• When possible, perform hands on testing with the primary cloud analytics competitors and alternative technologies to assess their capabilities and performance.
• Document, post and communicate feature/function and performance analysis for competitive offerings for use by Teradata Engineering and Product Management
• Advise Teradata field personnel (technical sales support) regarding the strengths and weaknesses of competitive products and technologies
• Assist Product Marketing and Product Management to understand the positioning of technologies that would be considered competitors to Teradata’s products
• Develop strong, trust-based, working relationships with individuals in the Product Marketing, Product Management, Engineering and Global Benchmark Center teams in San Diego.
• Attend vendor and industry conferences to gather information and insight on the relevant, competitive technologies.
• Provide subject matter expertise and participate with a range of working groups and teams on an ad hoc basis.
• Provide both low level technical insight, and also be able to use this detailed knowledge and experience to articulate higher level comparative advantages and disadvantages of these products and technologies relative to Teradata’s platforms. 

Requirements:

• BS Degree in Computer Science or related discipline
• 10 years overall technical/hands on experience with contemporary data warehousing and analytics data platforms
• Competitive analysis experience of 3 or more years in the area of analytics and data warehousing platforms.
• In-depth understanding of contemporary and emerging analytic data warehousing architectures and technologies with a particular focus on advanced analytics platforms (including open source) in the cloud. 

Ideally you would have:

• Experience with and knowledge of advanced analytics and data warehousing platforms, especially in the cloud
• Experience with and knowledge of Teradata platforms
• Understanding related technologies such as BI and/or ETL tools
• Understanding of emerging advanced analytics platforms and tools
• Customer experience is of particular value
• Experience with the planning and execution of competitive benchmarks for analytic and data warehousing systems
• Experience with evaluating to recommending alternative analytics and data warehousing technologies, platforms and vendors
• Proven ability to provide ad hoc consultative expertise
• Hands on experience (especially customer experience)
• Understanding and experience with Teradata’s platforms
• Knowledge of emerging data management technologies (Hadoop, Spark, etc.) and open source technologies, system architecture tradeoffs, performance tuning, resource management, and the hardware that supports these systems
