Teradata builds leading edge scalable database and analytics products. This position will advance the state of the art in analytic technologies, by design and engineering of some of the most complex and reliable extreme scale information and communication systems in the world.  Architects are senior individual contributors who lead the technical aspects of designing, implementing, testing, deploying, and operating Teradata products and platforms.

Reporting to the Sr. Director of TIO Architecture, the Principal Research Architect will implement new technologies as proofs or integration ready demonstrations of architectural frameworks and capabilities.  The position will consult, advise, and demonstrate for teams across engineering and SOM on appropriate architectural implementations.  The position will also research areas of new technology, implementing proofs with the objective of informing architectural guidance and policy.

Essential Job Functions

  • Consult with technical teams across the organization to design and implement highly reliable, scalable, extensible, maintainable, global, and operable platform software and components.
  • Investigate, analyze, and evaluate new analytics, engineering, and software technologies. Drive the aspects of Teradata technical strategy related to innovation and scalability of analytic and data solutions platforms
  • Identify opportunities for technology to provide sustainable differentiation from competitors.
  • Build systems that balance resources, constraints, requirements, and complexity.
  • Work with other architecture and engineering leaders to provide technical guidance on products and services being envisioned for platforms or product lines.
  • Develop engineering-wide technical processes, standards, solutions, and strategies that resolve significant product or organizational pain-points, with a view towards resolving with a view to future capabilities and engineering efficiency.
  • Partner closely with Strategic Offer Management and other business owners to articulate customer needs; define the next generation of product capabilities; advise on product portfolios and roadmaps; and investigate potential partnerships.
  • Mentor or organize the activities of other architects in TIO or Engineering organizations.
  • Build leading edge software and implementation proofs of new technology and technology integrations, using novel techniques, software, and methodologies, with a future vision of directly using those proofs in production.

Position Requirements

  • Expert in software development domain and principles, including design patterns, code structure, programming languages, continuous integration, and deployment architecture
  • Extensive hands on implementation and operations experience with Extreme Scale Teradata or other MPP implementation systems.
  • Expertise in Internet systems design and implementation.
  • Industry-leading expert in technologies related to the Teradata mission - (distributed systems, content management, indexing, database, web services, multi-tier serving architectures, mobile devices, and communications protocols)
  • Awareness of industry trends and recent innovations and our competitors
  • Analytical skills: complexity, capacity, performance, quality, logistics, statistics
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience with object-oriented technologies, including a range of design patterns
  • Extensive experience with Linux, Apache, relational and non-relational data systems is required; knowledge of many languages and operating environments (Windows, C/C++, Java, GoLang, and Python) desirable.
  • Experience with Web Technologies (Apache, AJAX, HTML, JavaScript, HTTP, REST, XML) and micro-service architecture is highly desirable.
  • Understanding of large-scale data processing technologies is required.

 

Education and Experience

  • Typically MS in CS or equivalent experience. D. is desirable.
  • 15+ years of directly related experience; 10+ years of technical leadership experience
